The E82 1-Series Coupe, produced from 2007 to 2013, brought BMW's rear-wheel-drive dynamics to the compact segment. In Europe, the E82 was offered with a wide range of engines, from efficient four-cylinder diesels to potent inline-sixes. The U.S. market received a more focused lineup, starting with the 128i and topped by the 135i. The crown jewel, the 1 Series M Coupe, was a limited-production model that arrived in 2011. Unlike many BMWs of its era, the 1M maintained near-identical specifications globally, featuring the same N54 twin-turbo inline-6 engine producing 335 hp in all markets. This approach foreshadowed BMW's move towards more globally consistent performance models.
