The first-generation Z4 built upon the Z3's foundation with more modern styling and improved dynamics. Unlike its predecessor, the Z4 launched with a more globally consistent lineup. Both European and U.S. markets received similar engine options, including the range-topping 3.0L inline-6. The Z4 M Roadster and M Coupe, introduced later in the model's life cycle, featured the same S54 engine used in the E46 M3, with minimal differences between European and U.S. specifications. This approach represented a significant step towards global product harmonization for BMW's performance models.
